It’s September 23 and I already voted for Debbie Hiscott. She’s the best candidate for Falls Church City Council on the ballot this year, and here’s why you should vote for her, too.
You may know Debbie as the gracious and fun host of the Falls Church Education Foundation (FCEF) Gala and Run for the Schools. You may recognize her voice as the announcer at GMHS Field Hockey games, or at the 2020 Graduation Car Parade. She greets and treats every person as a superstar. That’s an important part of who she is, but there’s so much more to Debbie Hiscott.
All three candidates have great ideas. She is the only candidate who has shown that she knows how to make ideas reality. Debbie does hard things. She doesn’t shy away from challenges. Even when they seem hard, she says, “Yes!”
Drawing on her background in business development and corporate finance, she has turned FCEF into a fiscally sound, non-profit organization that fulfills its mission on a daily basis.
When Falls Church City Public Schools (FCCPS) needed to take the Family Assistance Fund to the next level, Debbie stepped in to help. She transformed an existing structure so that school social workers could focus on delivering services to students, while she focused on raising the funds to help them - a true partnership. In March 2020, when community members needed extra help to weather the Covid-19 pandemic, the Family Assistance Fund was in place. Debbie led the effort to raise more than $120,000 from the community to support Falls Church families.
This quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg that keeps popping up makes me think of Debbie, “...if you want to be a true professional, you will do something outside yourself...something that makes life a little better for people less fortunate than you.”
City Council members are most effective when they take their own great ideas and work together to make them happen. Debbie is the only candidate with deep, proven experience as a collaborator, building support for ideas to make them reality.
Debbie took the helm of FCEF at a challenging time. She works day-in, day-out to build bridges to all community members. She assembled a strong and passionate Board of Directors brought in new volunteers, and enthusiastically shares the stories of how FCEF is helping students and teachers. She is a strong believer in the importance of public education, and her leadership has helped to level the playing field for everyone.
When the women who do the work in Falls Church are part of the City’s decision-making leadership, everyone benefits. Two women on the Falls Church City Council are not enough. Electing Debbie to City Council will bring another collaborative, connected, compassionate woman to the decision-making body. This will be beneficial to every person in Falls Church.
Please join me in voting for Debbie Hiscott in the November 2020 election!
